Learning Farsi on 테헤란로
Teheran ro

Traces of a love story are under a bowl of sugar next to a cup of tea. This love story requires multiple endings. Would you like to write, in any language, the final chapter of Learning Farsi on Teheran ro (테헤란로)? Napkins and tea will be provided. Please bring your own pen.

This performance is about falling in love while being between languages and lands. A diplomatic connection made by the mayor of Seoul and the mayor Tehran in 1976 marked more than the name of streets. It began a journey of learning ways to love myself through understanding a language that in the United States felt distant and foreign.  In Learning Farsi on 테헤란로 Teheran ro I narrate the ways Farsi cannot quite be translated into English but in a Korean context created new understandings and space for a deeper understanding of possible identities and relationships.

This project was first shared as an installation in Florence, Italy for the Iranian Women’s Studies Foundation Conference during July 2017.

In September 2018 Learning Farsi on Teheran ro (테헤란로) was further developed into a performance during a commissioned artist residency at Mare Culturale Urbano Milan, Italy.
